Vallebona, in an excellent sunny position, is located at the extreme Western point of ‘Liguria’ and at four kilometres from Bordighera and the sea. The village, dating from the twelwth century, is characterized by typical stone built houses, narrow alleys, suggestive ‘carugi’, arches and buttresses.
During the last years, the historical centre has been skilfully restored and brought back to its original charm. The surroundings of the village offer sea view as well as mountain view. On the steep hillsides and the softer slopes, divided into terraces sustained by dry stone walls, flowers alternate with olive and citrus trees and Mediterranean plants. The scenery constantly changes from the grey-green shades of the olive trees to the yellow of the mimosas, the dark green of the pine trees and the bright colours of the ‘ginestre’ (broom).
The main economic activity is flower growing. The cultivation of ‘ginestra’, mimosa and peache flowers is possible thanks to its mild climate, its low attitude (149 meters above sea level) and its proximity to the sea.
Vallebona’s gastronomy boats of typical Ligurian dishes: rabbit spiced with laurel, rosemary and black olives; meat ravioli, ‘torta verde’ (green pie) and ‘meresane’, ‘zucchini’ flowers filled with vegetables, eggs and cheese. Typical desserts are ‘Buscaiteli’ and ‘Bugie’ flavoured with orange flower water, reminders of an antique countryside activity. During the Summer, the village offers a rich calendar of events with shows, movies, parties with musical bands from Vallebona and traditional culinary festivals followed by dancing with orchestra. |
