Pigna
  Pigna

In one of the most beautiful valleys of Western Liguria, between the renowned ‘Riviera of the Flowers’ and the famous ‘Côte d’Azur’, in a rich territory of historical attractions rises Pigna, a typical ancient village. Although the sea is at little distance, one breathes the mountain air already.Surrounded by forests of chestnut, oak and olive trees, Pigna looks like a cascade of old houses sliding down gently along a soft hill towards the river, while up the hill, the medieval bell tower proudly resists..The historical center, in which the first settlement took place during the tenth century, still maintains vestiges of the past and presents itself like an embroidery of “chibi” (dark ‘carrugi’ or dark little alleys) offering partial views of the stone fountains, passages, steps, staircases and portals carved in slate.Important business center during the passed centuries, Pigna was a crucial passage point in the connection between the coast and the hinterland from Piemonte and Nice. The climate of the high Nervia Valley favors the cultivation of the ‘Taggiasca’ olive and the production of an excellent extra-vergine olive oil and ‘Rossese’ Wine. But Pigna is also famous, for the cultivation of white beans, I ‘Fagioli bianchi di Pigna’ of high quality. that happily accompany fancy dishes as well as local recipies. Dried tomatoes and mushrooms conserved in oil as well as ‘Taggiasche’ olives in pickling brine are part of the local tradition. The gastronomy proposes delicious specialties such as ‘Crusetti with ‘Mescia’ (home made pasta made in the shape of butterflies with vegetables), herbs ravioli with ‘pesigu’, ‘Pisciarada’ (potato pie), ‘Fugasun’ (vegetable pie), rabbit with olives. The antique medieval village of Pigna, famous for its Roman church, for its Festival of Poetry, for its comedy in dialect and for its ‘Museo della Civiltà Contadina’ (Museum of the peasant civilization) receives lots of visitors during autumn for the gastronomic celebrations of the mushrooms and raviolis. In this land, rich in history and traditions, sulfurous water of 32 degrees Celcius springs from an old source. Rich in minerals, the source was already known a long time ago for its therapeutic properties. Quiet and immersed in nature, at a few steps from the historical centre, a luxurious and modern thermal centre, the Grand Hotel ‘Antiche Terme di Pigna’, provides all modern techniques in hydrotherapy, beauty care and fitness. A typical Mediterranean refuge where it is possible to enjoy the physical and psychological effects of the sulfurous waters. The Provincial Road nr. 64 of the Nervia Valley connects Pigna to Ventimiglia (more or less 20 km) and counts also with a bus service.Motorway A10 Genova - VentimigliaFor those who come from Genova: exit Bordighera.
